safari & sand luxury package kenya>9 nights sanctuary retreats

Safari & Sand in Kenya

Duration: 9 nights

Combine a stay at our award-winning luxury safari camp, Sanctuary Olonana, in the epic Masai Mara with overnights at our partner hotels in Samburu Game Reserve and Lamu Island. A fantastic combination of exciting game viewing and relaxation.

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to our partner hotel The Norfolk.

The Norfolk is one of Kenya's most famous hotels, and certainly one of its oldest. Set in mature gardens in the centre of the city, it has been a meeting place and first port of call for generations of travellers to East Africa's spectacular game parks. Recently renovated, the Norfolk still retains its charm. The hotel has 165 rooms set around a central garden area which, despite being in the centre of downtown Nairobi, has a wide variety of bird life. All the rooms have en suite bathrooms and satellite television. There is a choice of four restaurants at the hotel; they range from the grandest in Kenya to casual. All have very good food, as does the Delamere Terrace where city businessmen still meet for a drink after work and from where many a safari has set out in the hundred years since the Norfolk first opened its doors.

Meal plan: meals on your own arrangement today as this depends on your arrival time.

Overnight: Fairmont Norfolk Hotel (Partner Hotel)

After an early breakfast, transfer to Nairobi's Wilson Airport for a scheduled flight to Samburu Game Reserve.

Samburu's harsh, arid savagely beautiful wilderness depends on the steady flow of the Uaso Nyiro River for its existence. The river attracts a wide variety of animal species not found south of the Equator, including the majestic beisa oryx, the reticulated giraffe, the thin-striped Grevy's zebra, and the giraffe-necked gerenuk antelope which stands on its hind legs to feed. Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard can all be seen around the river, and the 400-plus species of birds are positively spectacular. Together with neighbouring Buffalo Springs and Shaba National reserves, Samburu comprises 833 square kilometres of protected semi-desert land. It is also the home of the Samburu tribe, cousins of the Maasai, who share the same nomadic, cattle-herding existence, and even stricter adherence to their age-old rites and customs.

On arrival in Samburu you will be met by your driver guide and driven to our partner camp, Larsens Camp, with game viewing enroute. Larsens is a luxurious tented camp located on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River with just 20 tents, all with en suite bathrooms and a private verandah. Meals are served in the garden on the river bank or in the dining tent which overlooks the river. There is a pool, massage area and a gift shop.

This afternoon venture out into the Reserve for a game viewing drive, ending with sundowners at a specially chosen viewpoint before returning to camp for dinner.

This morning, after a hearty breakfast, take a scheduled flight to the world renowned Masai Mara for your stay at Sanctuary Olonana. Upon arrival at the airstrip you will be met by a Sanctuary Olonana representative and transferred to camp. Driving time to camp is approximately 20 minutes with game viewing en route.

Sanctuary Olonana is a small luxury camp idyllically nestled on the banks of the Mara River. The camp features just 14 spacious and tastefully appointed tents with en-suite bathrooms and river view verandahs where guests can relax and watch the resident hippos wallowing. The main cottage's lounge and dining area offer a 'home from home' feel, and its spacious verandah provides the perfect setting for after dinner star gazing. In between game viewing, guests have the opportunity to relax at the pool or revitalise at the mini-spa. Sanctuary Olonana received a Silver rating award from Ecotourism Kenya for its innovative wetlands and tree-planting projects.

After lunch there is time to relax before your first game viewing drive in the reserve.

In the Mara, the wildlife is abundant and the swaying grasslands ensure that animals are never out of sight. Elephants browse amongst the large herds of wildebeest and topi, eland and buffalo, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle. The plains offer a rich variety of food for the dominant predators: lion; leopard; hyena and cheetah. In the Mara River, hippos submerge to snort and grumble while crocodiles sunbathe, mouths agape, on the riverbanks.

Return to camp in time to freshen up for dinner.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Overnight: Sanctuary Olonana

This morning wake to the sounds of the hippo and enjoy a hot cup of coffee served at your tent.

You may choose to start your day with a morning game drive followed by a visit to the nearby Maasai village - an opportunity to interact with the villagers and get a feel for the Maasai pastoralist heritage. Alternatively, you may like to take a bush walk with an armed ranger and naturalist, finding out about the plants and trees and how they are used in the daily lives of the Maasai. Learn about insects and even how to spot animal signs which are everywhere, but not that easily noticed by the untrained eye.

Return to camp and relax with a refreshing drink as you watch the resident hippo, or enjoy exotic spa treatments before settling down to a well deserved lunch.

In the late afternoon you may want to take an afternoon game viewing drive returning as the sun fades to enjoy sundowners on the deck and exchange stories of the day before dinner.

Overnight: Sanctuary Olonana

Another full day to explore the area and experience the phenomenal wildlife. Game viewing is never dull in the Mara, and patience is often rewarded with unique sightings. A pride of lion stalking their prey; a solitary leopard retrieving its kill from the high branches of an acacia tree; male wildebeest sparring to attract females into their harem; or even a herd of elephant protecting their young from opportunistic predators. The western border of the park is the spectacular Siria Escarpment which, together with the acacia dotted plains, creates scenery of stunning beauty. The annual wildebeest migration traditionally is present in the Mara from around July to September and at this time nature's dramas unfold before your very eyes at every turn.

In between game viewing take advantage of our open design spa to relax and enjoy treatments with the sound of the birds, the occasional grunts of the hippo in the river below and the wind blowing softly through the trees.

During your stay in the Mara, there are also a variety of other options that you can take advantage of. Enjoy a morning hot air balloon safari, observing elephants looking improbably small, giraffe broswing amongst the tree tops and antelope grazing - followed by a full breakfast served in the bush. Book an adventure on Lake Victoria with an opportunity to try fishing for the legendary giant Nile perch as you explore the myriad of tiny islands found in this region of the lake.

Return to camp in time to freshen up for dinner.

Leave camp this morning after breakfast and take a scheduled flight to Nairobi. From here take a connecting scheduled flight to Lamu Island. Continue your journey by boat (about one hour) to a magical spot in a remote southern part of the island.

Our partner hotel Kizingo is the ultimate 'no news, no shoes' beach resort - a wonderful secluded and tranquil escape from the modern world. The lodge is situated at one end of a spectacular twelve kilometre beach that stretches from Kizingo (which means 'the point' in Swahili) to the fashionable village of Shela. Kizingo has eight beautifully appointed bandas (thatched cottages), set well apart from each other. In the early morning you can enjoy tea in bed and watch fishing dhows tack south to Malindi. Guests can be as private or as social as they wish, opting to enjoy fine dining on the balcony of their banda or join other guests in the bar and the dining room with their magnificent views across the bay to mainland Kenya where giant baobab trees spread into the brilliant blue sky.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Overnight: Kizingo (Partner Hotel)

Spend your day unwinding. Should you want to visit the bustling, fascinating town of Lamu this can easily be arranged and a guide will take you to explore the streets of this historical town.

The town of Lamu is a World Heritage Site. With only one car on the island, owned by the District Commissioner, the only traffic you may come across is a donkey winding its way down a lane carrying produce. Lamu's economy today is still dominated by fishing, mangrove cutting and shipbuilding.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Overnight: Kizingo (Partner Hotel)

Another leisurely day. The swimming is excellent, both in the Indian Ocean and in the calm waters of the channel that separates Lamu from the mainland.

For the more energetic there is a choice of activities, including a guided tour of historic Lamu Town, excellent snorkelling, the chance to swim with dolphins in the winter months and cycle rides to friendly African villages on the mainland.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Overnight: Kizingo (Partner Hotel)

This morning you may choose to relax or enjoy one last activity.

After lunch commence your return journey with a boat ride through the mangrove channel to the airport. Then take a schedule flight to Nairobi in time for your international departure.
