Gelede, traditional Festival (Benin).

Gelede Traditional Festival

Gelede is a cult dedicated to Mother Earth and is celebrated by the Fon and Yoruba peoples in South Benin to promote fertility of both the people and the soil. Each sculpted mask represents a different character – yet only the initiates are allowed to know the true nature and secrets of each symbolic figure. Masks are brightly painted and move like puppets, as they tell and mime myths and stories. It is both educational and very humorous. The delighted crowd laughs and claps their hands as they watch in appreciation. Indeed a fascinating mix of street theatre and magical theatre.
